For my client’s confidentiality, throughout the rest of this paper I will be using the false name of Carol to protect her identity. Carol is currently a full-time female student at York University. As I am also a full-time student at York university, when it came time to ask if she would volunteer as my client for this project, Carol’s academic appreciation and understanding personality made the interview very comfortable. Carol’s problem was between her and her best friend whom she feels are growing distant. She explained that she has known this friend since high-school but lately does not feel that her friend has time for her due to their busy schedules, her friend’s boyfriend and her own academic responsibilities. My plan of action†¦show more content†¦This excessive use of minimal encouragers was an eye opener for me of how often I attempt to convey support and understanding. This irritates me as it indicates that I am limited in my ability to express attentiveness and should develop alternative means. I managed to squeeze in three door openers (L 33, 72, 286) which I was okay with, especially given that they were evenly spread out at the beginning, middle and end of the interview. The use of questions was one set of invitational skills I thought I had done a rather decent job at utilizing. It was only after I typed up the transcript and coded the types of questions when I noticed I had asked more closed questions than I would have liked to at the wrong times of the interview. I asked seven closed questions (L 9, 17, 20-21, 27, 156, 328, 340-343). This number is also excessive as closed questions often serve the counsellor by taking control and giving people advice which could close people down. I was particularly unhappy when I realized that I had asked four closed questions within the first minute of the interview.
